Aurora Hunting
I went on a trip with my friend Sjonni in January to hunt the Northern Lights. We drove for an hour, and it looked like nothing was going to happen that night. We stopped the car and decided to go out anyway to capture some pictures.
After playing around there a while with our cameras we decided to keep on driving and see if we could find a better place with more northern lights.
We drove further until we arrived at Þingvellir National Park. In the parking lot were a lot of tourists, and as soon as we stopped our car the show began and the tourists went crazy.
We decided to walk further so we could enjoy the show without being surrounded by people. When we finally got away, we witnessed one of the greatest northern lights shows we had seen in a long time.
Somewhere along the way, in the dark, we split up but we both kept taking pictures and trying not to freeze to death.

On my way up I finally saw a light in the dark and ended up finding Sjonni over there

While we kept on freezing in the dark, but enjoying the view, I kept on shooting stills and managed to capture a few that I really like
As you can see, Sjonni is one the greatest northern lights models in the world
After a long, cold trip we finally made it home and got a good night’s sleep.
This trip was one of the best nights I have had for long time. I was so glad that we kept on driving and searching for the lights. What I learned from this is that you shouldn't give up too soon or you might miss out on one hell of a show.
What made it extra special for me was seeing one of my images among a selection of the best photographs from around the world on the Guardian.
